We’re hiring! We are looking for someone to join our education staff 24 hours a week to lead public programs, tours, and student experiences on the ecology and history of Hobcaw Barony.

REQUIREMENTS:
Although a degree in natural resources, history, or tourism is desired, a high school diploma and valid South Carolina Driver’s License is required.

Provides forest management assistance and outreach to landowners and the general public to promote active management of forestland and mitigate wildfire risk. Writes forest management plans to produce multiple benefits including the sustainable production of forest products, clean air and water, wildlife habitat, aesthetics and wildfire prevention. Administers cost-share programs and prepares reports. Assists landowners with implementation of forestry practices. Performs insect and disease activities. Represents agency at local meetings. Responds to wildfires both in-state and out-of-state through Southeastern Compact requests and western wildfire assignments. Participates in FireWise activities to include conducting wildfire risk assessments for at-risk communities in the wildland urban interface and other wildfire prevention events. Responds to non-wildfire disasters, and participates in wildfire and disaster-related exercises as directed. Assists in basic wildfire investigations, burn site inspections, participates in incident management activities on large fire events. Supports Sector Fire Management Officers on fire suppression activities. Participates in opportunities for professional growth as directed such as working with specialty foresters and participating in and/or conducting training as directed to include wildland fire training (i.e. fireline refresher). Serves as acting Sector Fire Management Officer when needed. Provides landowner services such as prescribed burning and timber marking in project area and elsewhere as directed.

REQUIREMENTS:
A bachelor's degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by the Society of American Foresters. Required to be a SC registered forester within two (2) years of appointment. Must pass a physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in thirty (30) minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack. Must obtain firefighter registration with the SC State Fire Marshall's office. A criminal background check is a condition of employment. This position works in Hampton, Jasper and Allendale Counties. Must live in their area of responsibility or within a radius of 30 miles of their assigned work center. Develops and completes new and/or revised Stewardship Management Plans for private non-industrial forest landowners throughout the region. Coordinates the plan development of private forestry consultants as well as other state and federal agency personnel. Provides assistance to SC Forestry Commission foresters in plan development. Coordinates the implementation of Stewardship Management Plans on private non-industrial forest lands throughout the region. Monitors landowner accomplishments to assess implementation and the provision of technical assistance to Stewardship landowners that will move them toward "Forest Steward" status. Coordinates Stewardship educational program for assigned region. Presents program information to interested groups such as landowner associations, conservation groups, garden clubs, etc. Develops or assists in the development of publications, brochures, news releases, and displays associated with the Forest Stewardship Program. Assists with forest management activities and agency services within the region. Participates, as a volunteer, in the SCFC Physical Fitness Standards for fireline qualified employees as outlined in the SCFC Procedure Manual, and performs other related duties as required in support of the SC Forestry Commission’s mission and strategic plan.

Works on a two-person forestry crew locating forest inventory plots and records inventory and health monitoring data at a minimum production rate with the degree of accuracy required by the U.S. Forest Service - Southern Research Station - Forest Inventory and Analysis Unit.
